Cripple Creek's
architecture is a reminder of it's "boom days"
as the gold-mining center of Colorado, circa 1870-1900
|
This is a fantastic
tour for history buffs that love beautiful scenery.
The fun starts as soon as you jump in our 4x4 vehicles
specially designed for mountain touring. We depart
from Colorado Springs and pass through the Pike National
Forest following the gentle curves and tunnels of the
old Short Line Railroad. Built in 1901, this route was
an engineering marvel with 10 tunnels carved through the
granite ridges with numerous trestles spanning the valleys.
On nice days the tops come off the jeeps for unobstructed
viewing of this picturesque area.
The Cripple Creek
Mining District, was one of the richest gold mining camps
in the world. Gold was discovered in 1890, and by
1900, fifty thousand people had been drawn to the mines.
Share the story of Cripple Creek, its historic old mining
buildings and the "new gold"
restored
gaming establishments on Bennett Avenue. We will
tour the old ghost towns of Victor, Goldfield, Altman
and Independence. The panoramic view from the abandoned
American Eagle mine at 10,750 feet includes three mountain
ranges in view for 100 miles in all directions.
We return by Hwy. 24 the route of the old Midland Railroad.
You may wish to add cooler of beverages and box lunch
to this tour for the guests'enjoyment.
You can also add a one
hour tour of the famous Molly Kathleen Gold Mine at the
end of your tour. You'll be guided 1,000 feet underground
by actual miners & will be in awe as you walk the
same shafts that miners have been walking for over 100
years. Ask our group tour manager for prices on the Molly
Kathleen Gold Mine Tour.
